Newington Ski Club
Board Meeting Minutes
September 19, 2024
Back Nine Tavern, New Britain CT

Call to Order:  6:00 p.m. by Marilyn Pearson, President
Board Members Present:  Mike Brown, Ted Rogala, Kathy McGuiness, Pam Bateman, Ron Kapraszewski, Lynn Swanson and Marilyn Pearson

Agenda / Topics, as presented by Marilyn

Club Activities:

  • Ski Bus Trip – Marilyn had researched the feasibility and pricing for running one in late January / early February 2025. Stratton is open to bus trips; lift ticket prices of $133 adult / $110 youth or can use IKON pass.  Stratton doesn’t require a certain number.  Datco bus rentals are a small (36 seats) $2,665 or a large (52 seats) $2,905.  Marilyn was thinking of charging $25 – $30 per person and supplement the cost with money from Mary VonE ($1200 – $1500?).  Suggestion was to charge more to non-NSC members, since NSC was subsidizing.  Board agreed the smaller size bus would make more sense; we don’t know how many people we will get.  Marilyn suggested we offer it up to NSC members first and then after an agreed upon time period, open it up to Council clubs.  Ideas of adding Nordic ski option (Stratton has a Nordic center at base of mountain).  Also, Dattco bus can be cancelled with no penalty fairly close to the run date  (Marilyn to confirm the timeframe…she thought it was within a matter of days).   Possible dates:  January 24, 25, February 3 or 4.
  • Bowling Event – No update from Mike Kahlberg/MaryAnn Kelly. Marilyn had called a few bowling alleys for her golfing group and weeknights were a challenge.  Lynn will follow-up with Mike & MaryAnn and raise up looking into weekend options, too.
  • Warren Miller Movie Night – Mike Brown will lead this effort; he had already contacted The Bushnell (viewing on November 2nd and will offer a group discount (for 10 or more) of $3 ($21 per person vs $24 regular rate).  There is a second showing at Mohawk but no one has returned Mike’s calls.  Board agreed to pursue outing at The Bushnell.  Mike to firm up information.
  • Fall / Winter Hikes – Pam is willing to lead some; Marilyn concerned we will only get 4 – 5 people…still worth pursuing.
  • Holiday Party – Ted to lead this with help from Ron and Lynn. Ted to reach out to J. Timothy’s.  Timing of weekend in early January, so not to conflict with ski bus trip.
  • Sunday Road Bike Ride – Mike Brown will host his Glastonbury ride this Sunday, 9/22. Wheels rolling at 9 a.m.  Marilyn to get blast out.  Roads are not freshly marked, but there are Ride with GPS routes done.

Treasurer Report – Jack was not in attendance but provided the Board the current financial standings.  No issues / concerns.

CSC Member of the Year Inquiry – Board agreed NSC Member of the Year nomination to be for Marilyn Pearson.  Marilyn will not be attending the CSC Snowball due to recovering from knee surgery; she does not need to be present, but an NSC member does need to be there.  Ted has talked with Bruce about going (club may purchase the ticket…$85 this year).

Board Meeting ended about 6:50 p.m.  Members arrived for the member meeting at 7 p.m.  Much of this was covered during this meeting, as well as the following on the CSC meeting.

  • Killington – bought by several individuals who live on the mountain; this year will continue to be covered by the IKON pass, an independent pass and CSC Awareness Days
  • Monday Night Racing – start date is TBD
  • Other Club Trips – on the CSC website
  • Snowball tickets are now available (NSC members should reach out to Bruce Laroche). This year is a dinner/dance (Rum Runners is the band – same as last year).  Cost of $85 per person (sit down dinner)….same price even if you come just for the dance.  TBD on Hospitality Suites – Marriott charging clubs $500 for a hospitality suite.
  • NSC CSC Delegates are limited to 2 as it is based on membership. Marilyn reported in 130 members.  Bruce and Joe to continue as delegates; newer member, Nick to shadow Joe to take over his role as delegate in the future.   Additional members can attend meetings; the delegates are for voting purposes.

Motion to end meeting by Lynn Swanson, seconded by Kathy McGuiness.  Member meeting ended at 7:50 p.m.

Next Meeting:  Thursday, October 17  – Lynn will not be attending; need someone to take minutes
