NEWINGTON SKI CLUB MINUTES
March 15, 2018
Indian Hill Country Club
21 were in attendance during the meeting.
Meeting was called to order by President Jon Putnam at 7:37pm.
Secretary’s Report: Last meetings minutes were distributed to read.
Treasurer’s Report: Carol Sweeney reported we had 252 Monday night racing starts. Discussed racer rebates for each racer. The budget amount is $3000 total, to stay in budget the rebate for each racer would be $12 per race. Some items on the overall budget were less, some more. To stay fiscally sound we will stick to the budget and the rebate will be $12 per race/racer.
Membership: Marilyn Pearson reported membership income to date is $7288.89 through Zap events. There was $220 collected as other payment types. The membership to date includes 245 memberships (families etc.) The breakdown is: 51 Individual, 52 Retiree/Senior, 71 family, 21 College, 50 Lifetime. The overall membership income is down from last year as expected. Last year the income was $8800. We gained some and lost some members over the year. There were a couple of new sign ups right before On Snow. Some of the lost revenue came from omitting the discount in early registration. There will be an increase in some of the categories next year.
Monday Night Racing: Ron Kapraszewski reported that we came in a strong 2nd place overall to Mountain Laurel. The changes to the lodge at Mt. Southington have been great, and we were able to race all 8 weeks.
On Snow: March 2-4th 2018 at Okemo. Ron Kapraszewski gave a re-cap. We came in 1st place overall. 13 Clubs participated. It came down to the last day to be sure we finished 1st place. Thank you to all who helped run the event, and to Doreen Witkiewicz for her computer expertise and work. The bib collectors did great, no lost bibs this year. A benefit to winning On Snow is that it saves the club dues for next year to the CSC. It was a very successful ski weekend with the new snow. On Snow selection for 2019 with the CSC is scheduled in May Thank you to Ron Kapraszewski for his hard work in organizing the races.
Big Sky Trip: was March 6-13, 2018. John Hunter gave a report; all had fun, and great snow. 30 skiers went on the trip. Very large mountain! Thank you John for organizing. Pictures will be sent to Jon or Paul to post on the website. Next year’s trip will be to Sugarloaf 3/10-3/15.
Spring Banquet: Saturday May 5th. 6:30 at Indian Hill Country Club. Come and bring a friend. Marilyn Pearson and Ted Rogala are working out the details. If you have any ideas for something different for entertainment, see Marilyn or Ted.
Soup, Stew and Chili Night – Was a success! About $1500 was raised for Skiers Unlimited thanks to NSC and MTL ski clubs. Ideas were discussed to take it to a new level.” Souper bowl”, charge for the bowl $20, get donations from restaurants. See if Steve can do a recording or slide show showing the skiers on the mountain. We need someone next year to organize the event and new ideas. Lily Hill’s memorial donations also contributed to the success.
Youth Donation: Joe Machowski has an additional $120 donation for the Kid’s racing/ skiing scholarship available for our kid’s in the ski club. The total now is $420. We need more thought on how best to use these funds. Some ideas discussed were- rentals for the year, ski instruction, Jr. racers for On Snow.
Officers for Next Year: So far we have the following Officer positions ready for the slate for the 2018/2019 year. Vice- President- Jack Fede, Secretary – Andrea Albert, Treasurer- Carol Sweeney. We are still working on the president position. See Jon Putnam if you would like to volunteer for President of the club next year.
Ski Club Roster: Doreen Witkiewicz is working on a PDF Roster, which will be sent to NSC members.
Tuckermans Weekend: April 7th. Ski one or 2 days at Loon, Wildcat or Sunday River. Hike/Ski Tucks on the best weather day. Right now due to lots of new snow, there is high Avalanche alert, The weekend date is flexible, we will monitor the conditions. Plan is to stay in Gorham. See Jon Putnam for questions.
